The 1987 VFL Season was 91st edition of elite Australian rules football and the first season under the leagues interstate expansion. The season commenced on Friday 27th, March and concluded on the Saturday 26th, September.
Overview[]
1987 was the first unofficial Australian Football League competition. The addition of West Coast and Brisbane Bears on top of the already interstate Sydney increased the league to 14.
The format of the season remained similar, with each of the 14 clubs playing each other once and then a further 11 matches. The finals involved the top 5 teams, which involved the top 2 teams getting a week 1 bye. The top team would play the winner qualifying final between 2 and 3 in a semi-final with the winner automatically qualifying for the final. Than the loser of the qualifying final would play the winner of the elimination final between 4 and 5 in a elimination semi-final. Then the loser of the first semi-final (non-elimination) would then play the winner of the second elimination final (elimination) in a preliminary final. The winner of that game would play in the grand final.
The entire final series was played in Melbourne, with a share between the MCG and Waverley park.
