The 1988 VFL Season was 92nd edition of elite Australian rules football and the second season under the leagues interstate expansion. The season commenced on the 2nd of April and concluded on the 24th of September.
Overview[]
Despite the interstate expansion the previous season, the league still ran under the VFL name. For the first time the Night series was ran as a pre-season competition. Hawthorn defeated Geelong.
John Todd replaced the one-season coach Ron Alexander at West Coast Eagles. Richmond brought in one of the favorite players, Kevin Bartlett as their coach. Due to ill-health, Allan Jeans was replaced by Alan Joyce as Hawthorn coach for the season.
Collingwood had the biggest improvement for the season, climbing 10 places to finish second. Whilst North Melbourne fell 7 places to 11th and out of the finals series.
This was the first season a team apart of the interstate expansion made it to the finals (West Coast)
