The 1992 AFL Season was 96th edition of elite Australian rules football and the sixth season under the leagues interstate expansion, but the third to be offically named the Australian Football League (AFL) The season commenced on the Saturday the 21st of March and concluded on the 26th of September.
Overview[]
Hawthorn defeated Footscray in the Foster's Cup. West Coast became the first non-victorian team to win the premiership. For the first time an official AFL draft was hosted, abolishing the previous regional recruitment.
There were two coaching changes throughout the season. After leaving Hawthorn at the end of the 1990 season, Allan Jeans returned to coaching at Richmond, replacing Kevin Bartlett. Gary Buckenara replaced Col Kinnear as coach at Sydney Swans.
Essendon started playing their home matches at MCG and left previous ground Windy Hill. This was also the last season a game was played at Moorabin Oval.
Footscray climbed 8 places which took them into the Preliminary Final. Melbourne fell 6 places to not qualify for the finals series for the 1st time during the AFL years.
