Although the league was still called the VFL until the start of the 1990 season, the 2007 season was the unofficial 21st AFL season as the league expanded from 12 clubs to 14 clubs in 1987.

The new clubs were West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears. In 1991 Adelaide Crows joined followed by Fremantle Dockers in 1995.

1997 was the start of a new era of the AFL. Footscray changed its name to Western Bulldogs. Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions merged to become Brisbane Lions. And Port Adelaide Power joined retaining the league with 16 clubs.

Club Changes

• Ross Lyon replaced Grant Thomas as coach at St Kilda.
• Chris Connolly resigned mid-season and was replaced with Mark Harvey as Fremantle coach.
• With another season with Carlton possibly winning another wooden spoon, Brett Ratten replaced Denis Pagan as Carlton coach.
• After 27 years as Essendon coach, this was Kevin Sheedy's last season at the club.

Geelong, Port Adelaide and North Melbourne climbed the ladder to qualify for the final series. After playing in last season's Preliminary Finals, Fremantle fell 8 places and out of the final series.

Titles

Geelong were the minor premiers and won the premiership. They played Port Adelaide in the Grand Final who finished 2nd on the ladder. Whilst Richmond won the wooden spoon.

Medals

Jonathan Brown of Brisbane Lions won the Coleman Medal for the leading goalscorer. Jimmy Bartel of Geelong won the Brownlow Medal.
