The 2016 AFL Season was the 120th installment of elite Aussie Rules football and the 27th edition since the formation of Australian Football League. The season commenced on Thursday 24, March and finished on Saturday 1, October.
Overview[]
There were a few notable fixture changes. For the first time since 1991, Essendon and Collingwood only played once during the home and away season. Carlton were not given any prime time Friday night slots, but were allowed to compete in the annual opening game verses Richmond. GWS played their first 2 home games at substitute home ground Manuka Oval. Due to a contract termination all of Sydney's home games were played at the SCG, instead of a mix between the SCG and ANZ stadium. ANZ stadium will however be Sydney's home ground for the finals. The AFL sanctioned the first ever LGBT pride game between St Kilda and Sydney. For the first time their was a bye between round 13 and the first week of finals.
Paul Roos retired as Melbourne coach to make way for Simon Goodwin. Justin Leppitsch was sacked as Brisbane coach and was replaced by Chris Fagan.
The Geelong Cats rose from a 10th place finish in 2015 to achieve a second place finish in 2016. Fremantle saw a massive decline, after minor premiership in 2015 they slumped to a 16th place finish in 2016. St Kilda dropped from 9th to 14th whilst Bombers dropped to the wooden spoon after having their main playing group suspended for the season.
