The 2017 AFL Season was the 121st installment of elite Aussie Rules football and the 28th edition since the formation of the Australian Football League. The season commenced on Thursday 23, 2018 and finished on Saturday 30, September.
Overview[]
There were a few notable fixture changes. York Park was renamed the University of Tasmania Stadium. GWS sold the naming rights of Manuka Oval and will now be known as UNSW Canberra Oval. North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs played in their first Good Friday match. Port Adelaide and Gold Coast competed in the first game outside of Australia and New Zealand, in Beijing, China. Simonds Stadium was unavailable until round 9. Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide played in the inaugural match in Regional Victoria at Mars Stadium, Ballarat.
Upon not being offered a new contract, Rodney Eade stepped down as Gold Coast coach and was replaced by Stuart Dew, after the remainder of the season was taken by caretaker manager Dean Solomon.
Richmond rose from 13th in 2016 to 3rd and eventual premiers. Essendon rose from 18th to 7th following the year-long suspension to the playing group. North Melbourne dropped form 8th to 15th, whilst Hawthorn dropped from 3rd to 12th. Reigning premiers, Western Bulldogs failed to make the 8 and dropped to 10th.
