The 2019 AFL Season was the 123rd installment of elite Aussie Rules football and the 30th edition since the formation of the Australian Football League. The season commenced on Thursday 21st March and finished on Saturday 28th September.
Overview[]
There were a few notable fixture changes for the 2019 season. St Kilda replaced Gold Coast as the hosts for the Shanghai match against Port Adelaide. Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville hosted it's first ever AFL match when Gold Coast played St Kilda in round 13 and Collingwood were hosting Melbourne in the annual Queens Birthday Clash.
There were a host of managerial changes throughout the season. Brad Scott resigned from North Melbourne, with Rhyce Shaw coming on as caretaker and eventually becoming the new full time replacement. Brendan Bolton was sacked from Carlton and was replaced by David Teague. Alan Richardson resigned from the St Kilda job and replaced by Brett Ratten. Ross Lyon was sacked from Fremantle, David Hale was made caretaker but Justin Longmuir was named as the permanent replacement. Don Pyke stepped down from the Adelaide job and was replaced by Matthew Nicks.
There was also a number of shifts in team performances compared to the previous season. Brisbane were the most notable improvement as they shot up 13 places from 15th in 2018 to 2nd in 2019. The Western Bulldogs returned to the finals after a 13th place finish in 2018 they came 7th in 2019. Melbourne were the most noticeable decline as they went from a promising 5th place to a lowly 17th, Sydney also fell off after a 6th place finish in 2018 they then dropped to 15th in 2019.
