The 2020 AFL Season was the 124th installment of elite Aussie Rules football and the 31st edition since the formation of the Australian Football League. The season commenced on Thursday 22nd March and will finish on Saturday October 24.
Overview[]
The COVID-19 global pandemic had a vast effect on the 2020 Season. Following the first round of fixtures, the season was suspended as case numbers grew throughout Australia. The season resumed on the 11th of June. The home and away season was shortened to 18 rounds, with each team getting one bye. The fixtures were gradually released to allow for adaptability should there be a second wave of COVID-19. Following the tightening of restrictions in Victoria, all 10 teams located in Metro Melbourne were flown out of the state and set up in various different hubs to continue the AFL season. For the first time in AFL history, the grand final would not be played at the MCG and was instead relocated to the GABBA and scheduled for a twilight match start.
Quarters were shortened to 16 minutes.
John Worsfold stepped aside as Essendon coach, he spent the year teaching and transitioning Ben Rutten to the senior coach role as a part of a succession plan. Rhyce Shaw also announced he would step away from the North Melbourne coaching job to focus on his personal life and was replaced by David Noble.
Saint Kilda rose from 14th to 6th and their first finals appearance since 2011. Melbourne rose from 17th to 9th and Port rose from 10th to minor premiership. Hawthorn dropped from 9th to 15th, North Melbourne dropped from 12th to 17th and Adelaide dropped from 11th to 18th. GWS went from runners-up to 10th.
