The club was founded in 1896 making it the sixth oldest club in the competition. They have a womens team currently in the AFLW competition and in the VFL women's, as well as a men's reserve team in the VFL.

North Melbourne joined the VFL in 1925 and were apart of the Victorian expansion to the Australian Football League, in the AFL era the Kangaroos have managed to win two premiership in 1996 and 1999 as well as a runner-up in the 1998 season. Since the golden era of the 1990's the Kangaroos are yet to mount a serious premiership push despite preliminary final appearances in 2014 and 2015.

Despite their struggles in winning trophies, North are highly regarded as a club who are always competitive and are no easy feat.

  • Essendon Bombers

The rivalry stems after Essendon had North excluded from the VFL as they drew supporters from the same area. This has enraged North supporters as many blame Essendon for their eviction aswell as their smaller fan base. North Melbournes first VFL grand final was against Essendon in the 1950's. Their rivalry was reignited in the 1990's as both clubs fought for premierships, aswell as a 2014 elimination final in which North came form 30 points down to win.

  • Hawthorn Hawks

The rivalry stems from the 1970's when the two clubs competed against each other for 3 out of 4 consecutive years, as well as 10 finals between the years 1974 and 1978 (North won in 1975, but Hawthorn won in 76 and 78). The Hawks dominated the Roo's in the 80's whilst the Roo's dominated the Hawks in the 90's.
