The West Coast Eagles Football Club is a professional Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia. The main playing squad compete in Australian Football League (AFL) whilst the club also has a womens team which competes in AFLW and a team in WAFL.

The club was founded in 1986 as a new team set to enter the expanded league. From 2018 onwards the club played at Optus Stadium, Australia's second biggest stadium having moved from the WACA. Since it's induction in 1987, West Coast have arguably been the most successful expansion team; they made the finals for the first time in 1988 and won the competition in 1992 having competed in the Grand Final the previous year. They have since won premierships in 1994, 2006 and 2018.

The club has one the second most premierships in the AFL era (4) and are now one of the most successful clubs in the competition.

Rivalries[]

  • Fremantle Dockers

The clubs most well known derby is it's rivalry with Fremantle known as the "western derby". Fremantle are the only other Western Australian club. Eagles have generally prevailed and lead the count 30-20.

  • Hawthorn Hawks

The club has developed a well-known rivalry with the Hawthorn Football Club as a result of several close and memorable matches. Most notably the 1991 grand final in which Hawthorn prevailed. It is considered the first interstate rivalry in AFL history. The rivalry was reignited in 2015 when West Coast and Hawthorn met again in the Grand Final, once again Hawthorn prevailed and won their 3rd premiership in a row.
